British Values

British Values at Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School.

As educators we recognise we have a duty to prepare our children for life in modern Britain and to keep them safe.

The British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect
  • Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs

The British Values form part of our work to promote the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of children.  This is reinforced regularly and actively promoted in many aspects of what we do, including assemblies, Religious Education lessons and PSHE lessons.  They are also a fundamental part of our Mission Statement.

At Our Lady’s, we also use the resources from ‘British Values and Universal Values in Primary Schools Lesson Pack’, produced by The Linking Network.  This organisation supports schools to develop a positive, cohesive ethos by helping children to explore their identity, celebrate diversity, champion equality and develop dialogue.  See www.thelinkingnetwork.org.uk for further information.

These resources help children have a sense of belonging to Britain and develop understanding that while they can make choices in their lives, they also have a sense of responsibility for supporting the freedoms of others.  They help children develop an understanding that the law is there to protect all, and we all have to abide by the law.  There is a focus on helping children make connections to others, explore and understand diversity, similarities and differences, and promote and champion equality for all.  These resources contribute to enabling us to equip children to be thoughtful, caring and active citizens in school and in wider society.
